This support is first provided in a safe environment of a retreat center with Christian people during a Kairos Outside Community weekend. Throughout this weekend the guests will have a chance to interact with other women who are in similar situations and learn how to form small groups to support and give each other strength in their journey.
At a Christian weekend retreat (similar to the Kairos Weekends), we cover issues pertinent to the adult women who wait, pray, and support their inmate relatives/friends. The Weekend is deigned for both Christian and non-Christian guests, there is no cost to attend, the minimum age is 20, and the retreat is held at a different retreat center in Ohio each Fall and again each Spring.
On the Weekend the guests receive the support of other women who are in similar circumstances. It is often difficult for relatives/friends to share their feelings and the lifestyle changes caused by the incarceration of family members and friends, but it becomes easier when they meet others who are also experiencing some of the same difficulties.
The residents on the inside are behind concrete and wire walls, but their relatives/friends are also behind walls ones self-built and self-imposed around their hearts. To be able to share their feelings, to know they are not alone, and to know there is a support group helps them to tear down their walls and face their situation in a new light.
